about

This track is about the Pals Battalions in World War One. Because of the overwhelming need for manpower during World War One “The Pals Battalions” were formed and men were recruited on the promise of serving and staying with their fathers, brothers, sons, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. For many families, villages, workplaces this led to disastrous consequences.

lyrics

The Pals (Battalions)

Beware the pips and braiding
They'll march you into hell
And when you turn your back boy
There’ll be gone with a sweet farewell
I lost good friends and saw things
That a man should never see
They fell in the mud of Flanders
Now they sleep in a frozen dream

They fell in foreign places
Whose names they could not say
They took solstice in sweet justice
But she stayed at home that day
History has a way boy
Of looking like make believe
But I can tell you this boy
It was hell and it happened to me

We stood as Pals together
We stood as friends should be
We stood as true blood brothers
We wrote our names in history
We took to arms when we were called
We watched it take our friends
We shone the light into the night
We were Pals until the end

The welsh the scots the Irish
All fell with us that day
The young, the old, the battered souls
To high a price to pay
One by one in slow time
We stepped into the light
People said we fought like men
But boy this was no fight

In the dimming of a life force, in the rolling of the dice
We took one step for freedom, and saw the gates of paradise
And friends we thought we’d see no more, were standing with us now
And Heaven’s light, was shining bright, into our faces now

We stood as Pals together
We stood as friends should be
We stood as true blood brothers
We wrote our names in history

We stood as Pals together
We stood as friends should be
We stood as true blood brothers
We wrote our names in history

Pals came from
Pompey, Durham,
Manchester, Hull,
Liverpool, Oldham,
Barnsley, Sheffield,
Glasgow, Edinburgh,
Cardiff, Swansea,
Bristol, Bradford,
They were the Tyneside Irish,
And the Tyneside Scots,
Newcastle, The Heart of Midlothian,
Grimsby, Accrington,
Leeds, Birmingham,
Cambridge, Carmarthen,
Kendal, Londales,
North Wales, Preston,
Salford, Scarborough,
St Helens,
They were the Royal Scots,
They were Stockbrokers

We stood as Pals together
We stood as friends should be
We stood as true blood brothers
We wrote our names in history
We wrote our names in history
They wrote our names in history
